ABOUT JC:

JC and his twin brother, Marco, have had monster careers and are still on the ascent to the top.

That journey started when they were little boys. They wrote a letter to Luiz Alberto Veiga (then Head of Design VW Brazil) and to their amazement, received a resonse with advice on what to study.

Years later, they not only met Luiz, but worked with him, and today, JC holds the same positon in Saõ Paulo.

Despite being an absolute design savage, JC is, without a doubt, one of the nicest and most genuine people I have had the pleasure to meet - it's no wonder him and Art Martins are so tight!

We got deep into his journey and his process and also the impact that the exchnage with Luiz had on him and his brother.

ABOUT ERIK:

Erik is a Norwegian designer living and working in California. He is passionate about all areas of design and has dabbled in concept art, product design as well as his main vice, vehicles.

He started out studying Engineering in Norway, which seemed like a natural fit, however, he became more interested in Car Design and soon found himself on an exchange program at Coventry University.

From there on he was hooked and eventually landed a job at LandRover. It was a dream come true, yet there was something missing in his repertoire. This gave him the urge take a step back and return to University.

He applied to Pforzheim and got onto their master's program. It was here that he really raised the bar and through his exposure to the professional, he was able to bring his goals into sharp focus.

Erik shared his perspective on the choices that he was faced along the way also how these shaped him as a person. His message is simple:

‘It’s never too late to change lanes.’

ABOUT ANKUR:

Ankur is an incredibly smart and driven designer based in Zell am See in Austria.

By the time he was approaching graduation as an Engineer, he realised that his heart was just not in Engineering and decided that he wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a Car Designer. He convinced his parents that he was not going to start working, but in fact, return to University and change lanes.

Ankur enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology to study Industrial Design in Delhi, where he was able to manipulate some of the briefs into Automotive themed projects. While he excelled in the creative space, it became obvious that it was necessary for him, personally, to develop his skills further in Europe and he had his heart set on Italy.

Again, he had to convince his parents that he had to study further and so he applied to SPD in Milan. After acceptance into the Foundation program, he gained admission to the Masters Course and started learning under the direction of Michele Leonello.

Ankur worked harder than he had ever done in order to get his skills to an exceptional level and eventually graduated from the program.

With a solid foundation in Engineering and 2 Masters' degrees in hand, he still struggled to find work as a Car Designer. Ankur took a job at SPD as an assistant tutor in order to keep in the loop and carry on developing.

Along the way, Ankur has unintentionally developed his very own distinctive xstyle of sketching. What started out as an experiment has become his trademark, whereby he sketches and shades with a single marker. These sketches are totally unique and therefore instantly recognisable as an Ankur Singh sketch.

After multiple setbacks and endless determination, Ankur eventually landed a job at Design Storz in Austria where he continues to thrive today.

He is humble, hard-working, and the perfect role model for the mindset and attitude needed to rise above the adverse conditions that every aspiring designer will find themselves in when starting out.

Enjoy!

ABOUT LEANDRO:

Leandro is a Brazilian Car Designer from Sao Paulo. He has over 15 years of OEM experience and has worked for companies that include PSA, GM and Honda.

Leo has also worked as a motorcycle designer in Japan, which he thoroughly enjoyed, but eventually made the transition in teaching and together with his ex-partner and the mighty Art Martins, he founded Sketch-it, an Online Learning Resource that teaches the fundamentals of Sketching and Rendering.

There are only a handful of people online that are genuinely adding value when it comes to teaching the craft of Car Design and I consider Leandro to be one of them.

Leo is not only an experienced designer, but he also fully understands the problems that most novices face when it comes to drawing and communicating their ideas.

He has developed a system that deconstructs the process to a level that even a child can understand and has helped many young designers through the process of securing internships and even getting their first jobs.

Make no mistake, Leo could go back to working in an OEM tomorrow, but he values his independence and simply put, he loves teaching and has been doing this years before the masses have seen the cash-grab opportunity.

Leo is an honest and legitimate guy with no hidden agenda, other than providing a product and service with exceptional value to anyone wanting to improve their skills.

He has a very interesting story and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about it in this discussion.

ABOUT GIULIO:

I really don't have the words to describe how prolific and exceptional Guilio's work is. New personal projects seem to appear online every couple of weeks and I just don't know how he does it.

Giulio spent a good few years at the beginning of his career at Bertone and has the bragging rights to the Jaguar B99 concept as well as the Alfa Pandion.

These concepts are so different, yet unmistakably Bertone. They are both more than a decade old and still hold up solidly today. It needs also to be noted that both of these projects were completed in his early twenties.

Giulio's skills have taken him from Jaguar to Ferrari and everywhere in between.

There is so much going on in his head and he has the ability to manifest these ideas to a level that most only dream of.

I urge every young designer, regardless of discipline, to pay attention this!

ABOUT MARK:

This guy looks mean, but he is one of the friendliest people I have met!

Mark and his partner, Ian Wride, started their motorcycle design company, Xenophya, out of a shed at Northumbria University and a 1500 pound grant.

There was no grand plan, other than that neither of them was ready to give up student life and face the world of employment.

Xenophya evolved into an unorthodox madhouse that developed a stellar reputation in motorcycle design and for over a decade, created many successful products for brands such as Aprilia, Royal Enfield, and Triumph.

Mark and Ian learnt everything by simply doing. This applied to design, modelling, fabrication, but also to their business. There was no blueprint or roadmap as neither had worked in other design studios.

Ultimately they did things that felt intuitively right and married this with a work ethic that would make most of us feel shameful. Like many small businesses, their word and reputation meant everything and this grew stronger with every project.

After a long and successful relationship with Royal Enfield, the company made them an offer to establish a Design Studio in the UK, which Mark and Ian now run.

Mark detailed that journey so beautifully in this discussion. Enjoy!

ABOUT SYD:

Syd is a French Car Designer that currently resides in L.A. He has worked for Audi, Porsche, GM as well as Peugeot. Although still relatively young, Syd has been a prominent figure in the Car Design community for many years.

His skills and prolific output are simply mind-bending and the envy of many designers. He credits a lot of his success to working out in his early teens that he wanted to be a designer and jumping head-first into the world of sketching and 3d modelling through pure intrigue.

This guy has an insatiable appetite for experimentation, which has kept him ahead of the curve for most of his career. He can sketch, model, visualise and create in VR at a level that makes him one of the best all-rounded designers in the business.

Sydney is resourceful and knows how to get things done. He is an amazing problem solver and seems to find solutions to all the brick walls that design throws at him.

Growing up under the roof of a rally driver, Syd has long had a yearning to get out into the desert himself. He recently bought a modified 1600 Beetle, which was built for the Baja 1000, and started desert racing. Go and check out his Instagram for pics of this awesome machine!

ABOUT ART:

This Brazilian Heart-throb is a Creative Powerhouse and is every bit excited about design today as he was when he started out more than 20 years ago!

Art is currently a Creative Manager at the California-based EV start-up, Canoo. He has worked for GM, PSA (Citroen), VW as well as Faraday Future and has done both Interior and Exterior Design.

Art seems to effortlessly produce an ocean of awesomeness on command. He shared many of his secrets and processes, which, unfortunately, consist of hard work.

If you are here, it's probably because you are aware of Art and his work and you would be forgiven for thinking that he was born with a Wacom tablet in his hand and a gift from God. He talked extensively about his early frustrations and how hard to he had to work to raise his skill-level.

You will be hard-pushed to find anyone that will have a bad word to say about Art and that's simply because he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I am officially dubbing him the 'Dave Grohl' of Car Design i.e. The nicest guy in our community.

I had to pull the plug on the conversation at 2 hours as I had a sick dog that needed to be taken out.

Those 120 minutes felt like 5, which is the best indicator of a quality conversation. Don't worry, we will do this again.

Obrigado!

ABOUT MARTIN:

This man is one of the Car Design industry's biggest unsung heroes and nothing short of a legend.

Martin has designed award-winning cars, products and motorbikes. He also competed in the British Formula 3 Championship against many great race car drivers, including Nigel Mansell and the amazing Ayrton Senna.

The Scottish native could easily have embraced the comfort of corporate security. Instead, he passionately sought out challenge after challenge and had to prove himself in every new situation.

Martin has contributed an insane amount to the industry and he did this from the shadows as a freelancer, a gun for hire, a hitman...whatever you want to call it. He has built a reputation for getting things done.

The first big project that put him as well as the UK-based design house, IAD, on the international design map, was a concept car called the Alien (used in the thumbnail for this episode). Martin went on to spend almost 4 decades (and counting) working independently for many different companies including AUDI, Ford, BMW and Aprilia Motorcycles.

He contributed an immeasurable amount to both the Iconic Z3 and the first-generation Audi TT. Unfortunately, he has never been credited for his contributions to either project. The story of the TT, in particular, has been one of the most callous acts of exploitation in the industry, even by large German OEM standards.

I did probe Martin on this during our conversation and, understandably, he refused to elaborate on the subject. It's been nothing short of torturous and after almost 30 years, he is happy to leave it in the past. At times there have been half-arsed attempts by very senior executives to make things 'right', but it's proved to be little more than lip service. I urge everyone to do their own research on the subject before accepting what has been fed to us.

It needs to be said that despite all this, Martin continued gracefully and with the kind of dignity that is devoid in much of our industry. It's been a very tough path, but he has retained his independence and is still fresh as fuck at the ripe old age of 63! He sketches daily and is a working designer.

I don't know if Martin will ever get the respect that he truly deserves, but every young person starting out should take a leaf out of his book!
